While the actual active image area of the ULTRA screen is only about the same size as the 45mm Series 7 and 8 screens, the ULTRA has more black area around the screen, so the image floats in beautiful inky blackness rather than being wrapped around the margins of the Series 7 and 8.Īll of the 45mm Series 7, 45mm Series 8 or ULTRA have a much bigger screen than any of the Series 6 or earlier watches. It's super light weight and not as big as you think, at least compared to a dedicated stainless or brass dive watch.
I was concerned that the ULTRA would be a huge thing on my wrist for daily use as are my dive watches, but it turns out the ULTRA just disappears. Unlike my other heavy dive watches, the Apple Watch ULTRA feels weightless, and with its big black screen, is a work of art. My older Series watches lost about 10% of charge per hour if working on cellular without a phone near I haven't checked that with my ULTRA yet.Įven if you don't need the battery life, the big, beautiful Apple Watch ULTRA is titanium and therefore with its trail loop band, weighs less (2.475 oz./70.2g total) than my stainless-steel series watches with their stainless-steel Milanese-loop bands (45mm Series 7: 3.275 oz./ 92.9g total). I always have my phone with me if you leave it home and the watch has to use its cellular connection, that also runs the battery down much more quickly. My ULTRA now typically has 65% charge left at the end of each day, even with a couple of hours of workouts. With conventional Series watches I would have to use a low-power workout option to have the heart rate sensor measure much less frequently to let me run for that many hours. My regular Series Watches could never run workouts that long. Just for giggles I was able to let workouts run for about 12 hours the other day, and my Apple Watch ULTRA just barely covered it all, with continuous heart rate data the whole time.
I workout at least a half hour every day, which is the daily workout duration for which Apple rates the regular Watch's 18-hour battery life, however every other day I workout for a few hours, during which the bright green rear LED heart rate sensor drains the battery with hours and hours of use. It turns out its biggest strength - for me - is that its huge battery lets me do many-hour-long workouts each day without having to charge.
